I would be disappointed in myself if I didn't make some comment on the "me too" movement going on throughout social media in the past couple of days.
"Me too" is a social media movement to raise awareness of sexual assault and sexual harassment in our world. The movement asks anyone who has been sexually assaulted/abuse/harassed to post "me too" on their social media of choice to help people see how common it is.
It feels appropriate to share some statistics on sexual assault for general awareness:
- 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused by the time they turn 18.
- Every 98 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted and every 8 minutes, the victim is a child.
- 1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime.
- About 1 in 33 of American men have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime.
This is just a sampling of the statistics found on the RAINN website. You guys, this is a HUGE problem and it's one of my greatest passions to bring the problem to light and provide a place of healing.
I have many posts planned on this topic, so I won't go into everything right now. I will say this: If you are a person who has or could post "me too" on your social media page, please seek help. Know you are not alone and there is healing and a light at the end of a very dark tunnel. There is love, understanding and support for you. I promise.
